Covid’s Impact on The Coming Generation
How is the future of my fellow students and the parents of students at stake due to Covid? One of the major effects of Covid on the world is that it has utterly decimated the amount of active jobs in the world, causing chaos in both the economy, and in daily life. With sophomores, juniors, and seniors either having to get a job or wanting one. This will be a major obstacle having depleted the amount of open job spaces circling in the world let alone Newark. As an eyewitness it has even become far more difficult for those who have been in the adult world and had jobs, them either losing their current jobs or having massive difficulty in acquiring a new one. with the prices of goods in varying stores shifting like water, it will be even more difficult for seniors to stay afloat on their own. Prices of basic items and necessities are fluctuating at intense levels. Like the prices of eggs dropping to under a dollar for a full carton or a single package of bacon being almost 9 dollars. These are only a few examples of the changing price values as of late.
Since the quarantine began, a vast amount of workplaces have closed either temporarily or permanently. Because of this, around 81% of people have lost their current jobs and the amount of jobs has drastically decreased. With this mass job loss and most students lacking prior work experience it has become exponentially more difficult for us to get hired. As well as it has heavily affected the flow of money and has caused large fluctuations in the economy. In the last couple months the economy has taken a gigantic dip and then partial rise that normally would have taken years to occur. As a side effect the prices of everyday items have changed along with it. With basic amenities either rising high in price or dropping low, gas prices included. For students who are pursuing a higher education this pandemic has increased difficulty. My brother began his college education last week, and he has spent hundreds of dollars purchasing supplies that he needs for classes that would be normally supplied in the class. Most colleges have also ceased usage of dorms, and those that haven’t have new rules and measurements that are active 24/7 instead of just at school. For most of those colleges that shut down the dorms completely, they have raised the price of tuition and other costs to make up the difference making college even more difficult to afford in modern day, especially when taking into consideration the job loss.
In conclusion, this pandemic has made life for students heading into adult life nothing but more difficult. Ranging from finding jobs, to affording food and gas, all the way to the actual cost of college. As a senior myself I feel uneasy thinking about the hardships that await me beyond the gates of graduation. The current effects of this pandemic are detrimental enough to daily life, but who knows what long-term effects this will have, even after it ends. Who knows what the future holds for students, but just like all the generations passed we will endure.
