How is Quarantine Affecting Sports

All spring sports and some fall sports are being affected hard by this quarantine. Many sports seasons are being cancelled and others postponed. Others are having practices over Zoom calls, just like schools are. Many 2020 seniors are not happy with how things are going.

Some baseball, softball and other spring sport’s seasons have officially been cancelled. The seniors who play these sports are not very happy that they are losing their final and last seasons. The students are not taking this news lightly. For example, the Newark girls basketball team was in the final four of the basketball championship and their games were cancelled. There is no champion named for this year.

Dance studios, soccer teams, and others are having their classes over zoom. These classes can only hold so many. Sometimes these classes can stop or skip and students may miss important things. Others do not have reliable wifi to support being on zoom classes. Many people do not have the space and materials for these practices.

Professional sports have all been shut down and cancelled. These sports that bring in so many spectators are where the virus spreads the fastest. These sports are losing millions of dollars due to not having games. Athletes that do not have a contract are losing money by not being able to play. The NFL 2020 Draft was all virtual this year and no one came in contact with each other. These players that were picked were not able to have that experience of walking across the stage in front of everyone.

As for colleges, spring football games and practices were cancelled. Their baseball, softball and other spring sports were cancelled as well and are not having any seasons. Professional baseball and softball players do not have this season to play at all. Some athletes are unable to get into gyms and lifting rooms to practice and stay in shape. Students are forced to find things to be able to work out with.
