ADOPT From Shelters Instead of Pet Stores and Breeders

Each year approximately 670,000 dogs are euthanized due to not being adopted(ASPCA). Animal shelters are in desperate need of more adoption. Many families go to breeders for puppies while there are an abundance of healthy young dogs at animal shelters. Sometimes even shelters and humane societies have puppies. One primary local shelter in need of adoption is the Franklin County Animal Shelter. While many Ohio animal shelters have become “no-kill” animal shelters, Franklin county is one of the most packed shelters. One way Franklin County avoids this is by once they reach capacity, they lower the cost drastically in an attempt to get dogs homes so that they can take in more. The prices below are for the Franklin County animal shelter. While these prices are $100+, breeders usually sell puppies anywhere from $400-$3000. Along with breeders, Petland charges an average of $2,000-$8,000 for puppies from puppy mills. Petland has been known for its significant association with getting dogs from puppy mills ever since they were investigated in 2010.

Puppies(under 6 months): $350-400

Juvenile Dogs(7 months to under 1 year): $200

Adult Dogs(over 1 year): $175

Senior Dogs(7-9 years): $100

Senior Dogs( 10 years+): Donation

Although many families want puppies, a younger dog, a few years old, can be a great idea. Many dogs a few years old are already potty trained, know commands, are not as hyper, etc. Another reason why shelter dogs are a better option for families is that you are helping the cycle of pet overpopulation. Helping Hands Human Society states, “There are not enough homes for all the animals that are born every year. Adopting from a shelter helps weaken the pet overpopulation cycle.” Overall, you are saving a life. All shelter animals are in need of a second chance. No animal deserves to live in a cage for years. Take advantage of this fantastic opportunity and save a life.
