Competition Between Makeup Brands


Throughout the years as social media has grown, so has the interest in makeup. With the growth of social media the interest of being more creative with makeup has increased. The thought of makeup isn’t anything new, the interest of makeup has always been in people's minds around the world. With creators posting their looks on instagram and posting tutorials on Youtube, problems have been rising with makeup brands. The main base of your makeup is your foundation and every brand makes shades for lighter colored people which leaves out the people with darker tones, and this problem started being very controversial in the makeup community.

Tarte cosmetics is one of the many brands that sadly became irrelevant in the year of 2019. Tarte is known for their “outstanding” concealer named Tarte Shape Concealer. This product has had tremendous reviews and almost everyone loves the coverage this product provides so the people wanted a foundation formula. When the company posted their swathes of their foundation launch people were furious with the shade range. Tarte came out with a 15 shade range foundation that left people embarrassed. People couldn’t believe such a famous company would launch something like this that leaves out the people of color. In this day and age as a big company in the makeup community you’re expected to have a variety to include everyone of every skin tone, and Tarte failed on that. Soon after the release of the picture of the shades and after all the backlash Tarte claimed they would be releasing for shades to complete the collection but that didn’t change how people felt about this situation.

Everyone knows the famous singer Rihanna, music is what she’s been known for since the early 2000’s, but in 2017 Rihanna released her own makeup line called Fenty Beauty. In the description on her home page of her makeup store online Rihanna states that “she wants to involve everyone” and that’s exactly what she did. Rihanna is a woman with a deeper skin tone so she knows the struggle women everyday face with the makeup world so she decided to take matters into her own hands. She made sure she had a wide variety of a shade range in her foundation collection so everyone can find a close or exact match. When she launched her shade ranger for her foundation the world was stunned and the competition with other brands rose. People loved the the amazing thing Rihanna did for the makeup community. Rihanna launched 40 shades ranging from light tones to deep tones to include all she could. This also meant a lot of bigger brands had some competition and things they had to change to stay in the realm of the makeup world.

In this day and age in the makeup community it’s very important to show variety for everyone and not leave anyone out or questioning. Rihanna changed the competition and showed lots of companies how their shade ranges should perform. There’s still lots of companies that don’t include people of color and it’s sad but after Rihanna’s presentation of shade range lots of companies have changed for the better.
