2020 Presidential Election Chaos
You may have heard about or recently seen more things about voting than normal on the news about the 2020 presidential election. This is because of the complications and obstacles that voters all over the United States have been facing. Some of those obstacles have come from the lack of workers for the polls due to the pandemic. Lots of states have eased up on voting regulations to keep from so many people being at the ballots because of COVID-19. People are now able to vote via mail called an absentee ballot and vote earlier than normal. BBC.com says that “There are currently over 300 lawsuits in 44 states concerning how absentee votes are counted, who are allowed to vote early and how mail-in ballots are collected” (Levinson-King). Voting by mail isn’t a new feature but it has recently been put on blast. It has been brought to attention because of the accusation of fraud risk and votes not being counted in the election.
Compared to past elections, this election has been more difficult and alarming. As everyone knows this past year has not been easy and a lot has happened to change what would be considered the normal election. Many threats have already been sent out via text message to voters telling them to vote for a certain candidate. It is almost certain that the chaos will rise no matter who wins because of the voting changes being made this year. People are already accusing false counts in votes. Many big websites and people have written about steps are needed in order to protect our right to vote in an attempt to keep people calm. Dick Gephardt Trevor Potter and Tim Wirth do that when they wrote the following steps to keep citizens thinking and active with decision making, “Congress should urgently invite further bipartisan testimony from governors, secretaries of state and state legislative leaders”(usatoday.com). “Second, the National Governor’s Association and the National Association of Secretaries of State could draw upon public health and election experts and their bipartisan experience to propose...further steps to address the unique challenges of this election year”(usatoday.com). Third, the governors and secretaries of state could work at warp speed to update their local election processes to address both the domestic risks and any threat of foreign intervention”(usatoday.com).
It is important voters read up on this election topic if you’re able to vote or even if you are going to talk or post anything about the election instead of causing further panic on themselves or spreading any news that could be false causing panic to others. Statements on improving the election are being made that can give hope and spark up a real idea to help change the process more beneficially. Not much action is being done to ensure that everyone’s right to vote is being protected and that voting will be accurate despite all of the speculations saying it won’t be. Every Unites States citizen should be able to continue their normal voting process and be confident it is accurate because it is their right. This is usually the case but because of the multiple situations like Covid-19 and threats, people are afraid or just can’t find a way to vote.
It has been said that this election has split the nation up more than ever. Not even just because of the long hours some people are having to wait just to get the right they are entitled to have. Violence has been a concern because the parties are just so different it’s making the people of the United States turn against each other and take out their anger instead of accepting the differences. People are going to be scared no matter how the votes come out. Many people will no accept it and blame the struggles that we had to work around to vote. This worries many people and no one knows what this country will bring after the election day. The wait will be intense after election day while they count all the votes that will hopefully be as accurate as possible even though it has been such a big struggle to find answers to fic the many problems in this year's election. Although all of this is true we all want one thing and that is for no one to be in danger and to keep our right to a fair election for this year and the rest to come.
