Restrained, Detained, and Unexplained

Almost half of the States are now suing Trump over what they are calling “unlawful.” The States are suing over what is called the Flores Settlement Agreement, which states that unaccompanied immigrant minors to be placed in the least restrictive detention center. President Trump is now rescinding this rule so that children could now be detained indefinitely. The States are in agreement that holding children in these centers is harmful and could cause long-term medical consequences. I talked to Mrs. Barnes, a government teacher here at Licking Valley; Who felt that “extending the length of time for children could be disastrous… separation could have lasting effects.” She agreed with what many of the states are saying. Separating a child from their parents, especially their mother, could have lasting effects mentally.

President Trump’s new policy, one that would force immigrants here receiving treatment to leave. Suzanne Gamboa of NBC News wrote, “ The Trump administration recently told families who were granted permission to stay for medical care that their permission to stay has been rescinded and they have 33 days to leave the country.” People are calling this a new low. This policy change was not made public before it went into effect. The families this effects found out through the mail that they had to leave. Mrs. Barnes said, “I think as a people we should try to advocate the wellbeing of people. I think we need to have that be more of a focus… if we have the ability to help them.” Many more people feel like this too, Senator Ed Markey wrote in a tweet, “The Trump administration is no longer considering medical deferred action requests for immigrants. This could be a de facto death sentence for patients. We all need to stand together against the deportation of sick, vulnerable children.” I completely agree with what Mrs. Barnes said. I think that rather than kicking people out, give them a chance for citizenship and offer them healthcare and education. If we are able to, then why don’t we?
