The Expectations Beyond High School
These days, teenagers are often expected to go to college right after high school and get an education. Most kids are raised to think that’s what is expected from them, even though they may not be interested in going to college. Schools rarely support the thought of students not going to college and going straight into working. This sometimes leaves the kids who don’t want to go to college in the dust and clueless. Our generation has very creative minds and we generate so many ideas that could benefit our career. Sometimes these ideas often come out to be a personal business, or an internship, that doesn’t require college. Teachers traditionally haven’t supported this kind of idea. Luckily at Licking Valley they have a class called “Journey Beyond LV” which is for the kids that don’t necessarily want to go to college.
Most teenagers that don’t have any interest in going to college typically want to work or have no idea what they want to do. In our high school we’re expected to know what we want to do as a sophomore/junior. That’s a lot to take in as a person of such a young age, because we're choosing what we want to do in our life after high school. A lot of the percentage of the teens don’t know what they really want to do till their senior year. Most of the time people will change their major after their first or second year. It’s also super rare for a person to have the same major all throughout college and then use that major in life after college.
There’s many ways to take after high school rather than going to college. Most kids think of going straight into working so they can make money and provide for their family or themselves. Or students try to start their own business in something that they love. One big thing is for students going into the military, but also taking classes while being over there. These days teachers are starting to have open minds about students lives after high school. And they’re taking in consideration all the other possibilities.
