What are the Most Wanted Classes at LVHS?
It is certainly no secret that Licking Valley does not have as much variety in classes to take as other schools in our area. Granville High School offers its students French along with the one foreign language that we have, Spanish. Licking Valley does not enter any science competitions. Our school just got AP Computer Science this year, which is something many other schools have had for a long time. With our lack of academic and extracurricular activities and/or classes, there is a large desire among students for more opportunities. As of right now, the biggest question is what classes do the students want most?
In a small conversation with our principal, Mr. Weaver, that took place via email, it was stated that Licking Valley used to offer a series of two classes that taught students both simple and advanced coding. Mr. Weaver says that the classes “covered everything from software to hardware to networking and it was very popular.” The class was eventually transferred to CTEC. As of now, many people are asking for these classes to return, and Mr. Weaver believes that “our offerings are lacking in the areas of Business and Computer Technology; specifically, I would love to have a class that teaches basic coding fundamentals.”
While Mr. Weaver himself wishes to improve our school in these ways, the student body has a different idea. In a survey in which students were asked what class they would like to see at LVHS, there were many unique answers. Some of these were photography, AP Biology, and different computer technology classes. The most common answer, however, was not one mentioned by school officials. The most common and most unique answer was a form of science: Astronomy. One Sophomore put a small note with her answer, saying “Please, I want it back!” One of the teachers here at LV, Mr. Weeks, has an interest in astronomy and has previously stated in class that he would love to allow students to use the telescope he has so they could observe and admire the stars.
We continue to improve our school every day. I have been a part of this school district since Kindergarten, and the changes made over the years are amazing. By the time everybody currently in LVHS is graduated, we will be advanced far past the point we are at now. After all, our school motto is “every adult helping every child learn and grow every day.” We have lived by that very phrase since the beginning of our school experience, and it is time for a change. Society is changing, as is our overall way of life. We must broaden our education and expand upon what we already know in order to succeed. That is, of course, what schools have done since the beginning of public education. Improvement is at the forefront of modern education. In the end, the students are not the only ones learning; the adults are as well.
