Porsche Goes Electric

We’re all familiar with that car company located in Stuttgart, Germany right? No? Maybe this will ring a bell; Porsche. Yeah, the famous manufacturer who has been around for over 100 years. They’re going electric.

Three years after Porsche’s parent company Volkswagen had its Dieselgate scandal for cheating on air pollution emission tests Porsche has made the decision to step away from Diesel. Porsche is one of the most luxurious and distinguished car manufacturers on the planet which is why its taking this step cautiously, as they should be. They made sure that the statement they issued did not demean diesel engines and claimed that they would “continue to care for the diesel cars already in the market.” Instead they just want their “future to be diesel free.”

By next year Porsche plans to have their first fully electric car; the Porsche Taycan. The Taycan is capable of traveling longer distances than its diesel counterparts while maintaining the performance and agility of a sports car. According to Porsche the car has “more than 600 horsepower” and after a short 15 minute charge it can cover around 250 miles. The Taycan can also accelerate from “0-60 mph in less than 3.5 seconds and pass 124 mph in less than 12 seconds.” Some of the fastest cars on the planet such as the Porsche 918 Spyder, Bugatti Veyron, and the McLaren P1 hit 0-60 mph anywhere around 2.5 seconds. With the Taycan at 3.5 seconds it's not too far off for a car that’s not necessarily focused on being one of the fastest on the planet.

The future of Porsche remains uncertain but one thing that’s for sure is that Porsche will be different. How much different is the question. With the Taycan set to release in 2019 Porsche plans to install chargers into all of its dealers across the United States. Porsche plans to have all-electric and plug-in hybrid cars will account for 25% of sale by 2025. Whether it’s powered from a battery or filled up at a gas station, one thing remains constant; Porsche knows what they're doing and they do it good, very very good.
