What the Future Holds

This year, in Freshmen Foundations, I took a test on the Ohio Means Jobs website. The test is meant to help students decide what they’re good at and what jobs they would work best in. I liked all the options the test gave me, but I keep going back and forth on what I want to do with my career. Then I heard that we’re supposed to pick a major in high school and that really got me thinking about my options. However, every time I think about it, I get so flustered because I don’t know what I want to do with my life or how my life is going to play out.

According to Ms. McMillen, the largest major in college is “undecided,” which makes it alright if you choose the wrong major in high school, because many college students don’t even know what major or career they want to go into. Ms. McMillen also wrote that choosing a major as a sophomore is difficult, but that’s the year you decide if you want to go to C-tec. This makes sense to choose your major as a sophomore because you need to figure out what classes you will b

e taking if you’re planning on going to C-tec, although it still seems to early for students to decide what they plan on doing with their future.

The future always looks scary in the distance as does the fact that you don’t know what’s in the future. At LVHS and many other schools, we’re forced to pick a major to decide our future and careers. Many high school students, college students, and adults believe it’s too early for students to decide the rest of their future while in high school. There have been many complaints that I’ve heard and one of them was “I have no idea what I want to do for the rest of my life.” Many students change their majors in college just about a dozen times, which is why many students don’t see the point in picking a career in high school.

Choosing majors in high school is extremely difficult. The good news is that your choice isn’t permanent, so you can change your major as many times as you want. We’re all human and we change our minds all the time especially in high school.

Don’t think that you have to pick a major and stay with it, because high school is just a portion of what the rest of your future holds.
