Changing History?
The NBA recently discussed changing the playoff system. The plan being discussed involves changing the league playoff system to a 1-16 instead of a conference-based playoff. This is under league review because of complaining about lesser teams being rewarded in the playoffs.
The talks of losing the conference-based playoff system have been on the hot plate for many years. Other than a couple of teams over the years, the Western Conference has dominated the rest of the NBA leaving some of the best games being played on the Western side of the bracket. With the new playoff format, it could possibly put the best two teams in the finals, not just the best out of two Conferences, especially now with one Conference having more talent than the other.
There have been many different opinions on the ideas of changing the playoffs between fans and players. Adam Silver, the NBA commissioner, said “You would like to have a format where the best two teams ultimately going to meet in the Finals.”
Some players have had a different opinion than the commissioner, such as Lebron James, one of the top players in the NBA and of all times. James told CBS Sports “I would disagree with that” and “I wouldn't hold my breath." Lebron James has voiced his opinion about changing the playoff and how changing the playoff is changing the history of the league, Lebron has also mentioned that each Conference has had it’s time at the top and believes both Conferences are balanced.
Some NBA fans may not like the change because the worst teams won’t make it into the playoffs, but they would if the playoffs stay East and West. Most likely the change won’t happen for a couple more year,s but this is a change that is still possible and talked about. Be
on the lookout this offseason for more talks about changing the playoffs.
