Small business will be left in the dust of electric cars

I was 7 years old, in the first grade, and I remember it was take your kids to work day. However, being that young you really don’t know what your parents do on a daily basis, and all you know is they come home around 5:30 from work. I woke up and my dad said “get some jeans on son you’re coming to work with so grab your lunch and jump in my truck.” As we pulled into his shop, I thought to myself I didn’t know my dad worked here. As we walked through the back doors, the smell of rubber and dust blasted me in the face as my dad opened the door. He turned on the lights and four cars were lined up, some with their tires off and some with their hoods up.

Electric cars are becoming more and more popular because they are safer, cheaper to maintain, better for the environment and they are all equipped with newer technology. However, this is going to affect my dad’s shop because he doesn’t have a mechanic that can work on electric cars, and all the mechanics that can work on electric cars work at the bigger dealerships.

I told my dad “When I get older I wanna be a mechanic so I can work with you.” He said “Sometime soon all of these cars are gonna be electric and smaller businesses like mine won’t exist because everyone will go to the dealership to get mechanical work done.”

Although electric cars may be better for the environment, it could affect the economy. According to

, small businesses makeup 99.7 percent of U.S employers, so if more electric cars are purchased, smaller businesses like my dad’s will be affected and bring down that percentage.
