Reflecting on pop culture

With 2017 in the rearview mirror and the semester about to end, the Prowler staff takes a personal look back at the biggest pop culture events in their eyes.

Emily Hoover:

At the young age of 19, Khalid Robinson dropped his debut album, American Teen, in March of 2017. The contemporary, melodic music appeals all types of teen audiences, causing it to become an instant hit. By October, the album was certified platinum, selling over 1,000,000 copies in the U.S. alone. While Khalid’s reputation has skyrocketed to the top over this past year, it seems the rhythmic artist still has a long and illustrious career ahead of him. Personally, I find his music to be calming and I love the style of his album, so I am very excited to see what he has in store for future albums.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi released on December 14, 2017. I have known Star Wars all my life, and people have made fun of my name being Luke for as long as I can remember. I must say the movie itself is amazing, but has a disappointing end. There were too many poor attempts at humor, I can only assume for marketing purposes. Not to mention the pointless Casino scene in the middle of the film. My biggest complaints are a total of two scenes with my favorite character, R2D2, and what they did with Luke Skywalker at the end. Now, my biggest question is what will Disney do with Princess Leia after the passing of Carrie Fisher? I would watch The Last Jedi multiple more times, but it surely was disappointing.

Emma Chapman:

The Last Jedi, aired on December 14, 2017 was long awaited after its predecessor The Force Awakens was aired in 2015. I watched the movie on December 21st with my family and multiple friends. The movie started off with where The Force Awakens ended and moved on from there with the Resistance fleeing from the First Order. Overall, even though the movie was confusing at some points, there was plenty of action, humor, and character development. I liked the movie because not only was there classic lightsaber battles like the original movies, but the indirect introduction to gray Jedi, or Jedi not belonging to the light or the dark sides was beautifully shown with not only Rey, but Ben Solo as well with their conversations and actions.

The Coachella 2018 lineup just released and its announced that Beyonce, Eminem and The Weeknd are headlining.

The lineup for Beyonce seems the best because it features Post Malone and Tyler the Creator. Eminem isn't as popular as he used to be but his lineup looks good and I can not wait to either go or watch it unravel on tv and social media. Past Coachella's have always been so amazing and no matter who is in the lineup, the music always ends up sounding great. The style of Coachella is bohemian or something along the lines of wild and free. I love this style because it gives people a chance to completely express themselves. The music is so full of variety that everyone can find something.

Megan Kollar:

Keeping up with their 17 year winning streak, the Blue Devils Drum Corps International group won grand champion at the 2017 DCI World Championship Finals competition. In my eyes and many others, this was a very big

accomplishment. As I watched the livestream of the award ceremony, my heart was pounding like a bass drum. The Blue Devils have worked hard towards their goals. Drum Corps is more than just marching around on a field. The feelings conveyed throughout the field into the crowd takes time and dedication, and that’s just what the members of the Corps have. It is unknown what 2018 will hold for the group, but their history shows a promising future.

Wyatt Lewis:

The suicide forest was messed up place before all of this happened with Logan Paul. But now that this is happening expect this forest to get a lot more popular and don’t think for the good. I think tourist will rush to this forest now even though it is such a messed up place in the world. This easily clickbait. Logan should have never of done such a disrespectful thing. Plus the family of the person that was dead in the video may of not even known he was dead they may of learned from a disrespectful video. Logan even had the guts to laugh about this situation and say “This was supposed to be a joke, why did it become so real.” In this case Logan Paul should be banned from youtube.

Mikayla Proffit:

Warped Tour will be saying it’s final goodbyes after the summer of 2018. This will sadly be the last year of the tour across the country. The reason for the tour concluding is the change in demographic. However, it’s exciting to hear that the staff behind Warped Tour are planning on making it a memorable experience for the dedicated fans.

The lineup will be posted in march, which is thrilling. Although it’s sad to hear it’s ending, it’ll forever be iconic. This last run will will definitely make the summer one to remember. Everyone should want to get a ticket! There’s no doubt that effort put into Warped Tour will pay off.

Zoie Chesterson:

The movie The Miracle Season is releasing April 13. This movie is about a volleyball team that suffers from a

traumatic event and they have to find the determination and work hard to try and get their team back on top. I would really to see this movie not only because I like movies about sports but I can relate to this movie on many levels since I played volleyball. The long hour needed of working hard to get your team to be good. The chemistry between the players because it's not just a physical sport but a mental, being able to connect with other players on the court is very important.

Ashley Webb:

With a 92% score on Rotten Tomatoes, Wonder Woman became one of the highest rated movies on the big screen

in 2017. This movie not only showed that DC Comics can actually make decent movies, but also proved that a movie featuring a female superhero protagonist can get the same ratings as any other male superhero movie. With demographics indicating that the theater audience was 53.93% female, Wonder Woman became the first superhero movie with a female audience majority in the United States. This movie proved that audiences will flock to movies that represent them.

Kimber Mitchell:

In 2002 the first episode of American idol was released. As the television show first came out it was an instant hit. As it continues to go on the show has been

Nick Collins:

The Overwatch Christmas event has just ended, this means that any loot that I wanted but didn’t get is gone until next christmas. This means that I now have to wait until next year to get snow owl Ana, arctic trooper 76, and I have to hope that Winter Wonderland Widowmaker gets made. However, the year of the dog event will be coming soon, and this is an opportunity for anyone to get the skins, sprays, and emotes that they didn’t get last year. Hopefully Mei gets a year of the dog skin and Orisa gets a skin (which she better). Purely speculation, but Widowmaker is probably going to get a chinese new year skin.

Gordon Hayward’s leg injury was one of the most gruesome injuries I have watched live ever. Gordon had the injury 6 minutes into his Boston Celtics career after going up for a lob and being hit by a Cavs player and landing on his left leg breaking it. I feel so bad for Gordon Hayward because he put in so much effort in the offseason to make the Celtics even better than they already were and to break your leg 6 mins into the first game it’s got to hurt. I feel so sorry for Gordon Hayward and I hope after his rehab finish he comes back better than he was before the injury.
