Women's Education in India
In 1998 there were over 200 million illiterate women in India, all of whom had gone without an education. India still holds one of the lowest female literacy rates in Asia. This negatively impacts these women’s quality of life. However, there are places people can donate to and help them get the learning experience that they deserve.
The article Women’s Education in India states “ Numerous studies show that illiterate women have high levels of fertility and mortality, poor nutritional status, low earning potential, and little autonomy within the
household." This shows that due to not receiving a proper education, women are being put in bad conditions. Not only does this affect women, but it’s affecting the country as well.
In 2017 the fertility rate for India is 2.45/ woman and the average age of becoming a mother is 19 y/o. The total number of girls in India going without an education is around three million. However, the gender gap is slightly decreasing as time moves on.
On International Women’s Day in 2017, NITI Aayog partnered with MyGov and the United Nations in India. Together they held the ‘Women Transforming India Awards’. This was a time to reward the nominees who were helping to make a positive change in India with the gender gap in education as well as end violence towards women and establish proper health care.
There are organizations for people to be active with and help out women’s education in India. Some of these organizations include Asha for Education, Room to Read and Empowering Girls Through Education.
All three resources are easily accessible and non-profit, so they won’t be pocketing the money that is generously donated.
