True Meaning of Christmas
Christmas is a time where families get together and celebrate the new year, or is it? I asked, they answered, and here are the true meanings of Christmas in the eyes of LV students!
Christmas is right around the corner and students at LV are more than ready for the week-and-a-half long break from the normal school routine. With all of the festivities, seasonal music, and storewide sales, it's a good time to remember what Christmas is all about, whether it be religious or just personal reasons.
In a survey, I asked what students believed was the true meaning of Christmas. Seventeen out of forty people said that the true meaning of Christmas is that Jesus was born. A person who wished to be anonymous simply put it, “[Christmas] is about the birth of Jesus Christ, but has also started to become a holiday to spend time with your family and appreciate each other’s presence by celebrating together.”
The second-most popular response from the survey showed that twelve out of forty students agreed that Christmas is a time for family and friends. Another student who wished to be anonymous beautifully summed up his/her ideas and wrote that the meaning of Christmas is “getting to spend time with your family and friends and the ones you love. Yeah, its fun and all to get presents, gifts, candy, etc. But I think that being able to celebrate Christmas with your family or those who matter to you, is the true meaning of Christmas. It's a day to just relax and be happy. I don't need tons of gifts to have a good Christmas. Although it would be nice to gift the great gift of snow on the ground.”
Surprisingly, no students said the reason for Christmas is receiving gifts or getting out of school (even if that may be only for a week and a half).
Whatever you may think Christmas is, may that be the birth of Jesus, a time for family, or a capitalism-based holiday, happy holidays and have a wonderful New Year!
