Goodbye to Letter Grades?
Today’s world is all about innovation and striving to find new ways to improve everyday life. In an attempt to better display and promote students’ learning, Licking Valley High School decided to switch their grading system to standards-based and kick the old methods of evaluating assessments to the curb. Say goodbye to your precious letter grades because they’ll be gone before you know it!
In an exclusive interview with our principal, Mr. Weaver, the students of The Prowler learned that, among many other progressing schools, Licking Valley may just be eliminating letter grades, which have reported students’ success for so many years, altogether.
Mr. Weaver says that the new grading system just isn’t compatible with letter grades, and that the old calculation scale cannot compute with a performance scale. As teachers become better acquainted with the grading system and develop more accuracy, the letter grades will be taken away, replaced with a true description of students’ mastery.
With this revelation comes relief, as students will no longer have to stress over the difference between a 3 and 4 being 5 full letter grades apart (B- to A+).
Speaking as a student, I cannot wait until the day where I don’t have to worry so much about getting a 3 because it will no longer be represented by a B-. This step of taking out the letter grades is a crucial part of implementing a standards-based grading system, and without eventually doing so, the change in systems would just turn out to be a waste in time.
So for the time being, stay tuned, because you’ll never know when these letter grades will disappear!
