Pineapple for President (or Pizza at Least!)

Pineapple on pizza has gained some fame during the past few years, with its taste discussed, debated, argued and defended. The question is, is pineapple on pizza disgusting or delicious?

Pineapple on pizza hasn't been around for very long. The concept originated in Chatham, Ontario where Sam Panopoulos thought of the idea for his restaurant, Satellite. It was a split second stroke of genius, or perhaps madness that entered Panopoulos head when he put pineapple on his pizzas, just to see if it would work. Panopoulos and his brother also added ham, and since they enjoyed the sweet and sour flavors, decided to sell the toppings on pizza and call it Hawaiian pizza, because of pineapple can’s source.

Fifty-five years after the invention, the President of Iceland, Guðni Th. Jóhannesson joked that he wanted to ban the topping on pizza. The statement caused a surprising amount of backlash and even received a response from the Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, backing up the pizza. The debate became so disputed and trendy early on in 2017 that it ended up in memes and everyday conversations.

According to a recent survey of 67 students, 48.5% agreed that pineapple on pizza is good, with another 4.5% saying that even though they haven't had the chance to taste pineapple pizza, they think it would taste alright. The rest of the students think that pineapple pizza tastes bad, with a little less than half the respondents never having eaten it before. One student commented, “pineapple pizza is an abomination and… no other toppings can make up for its disgracefulness.”

In my personal opinion, Hawaiian pizza is quite delicious with it’s tangy and sour flavors mixed with the sweet taste of ham along with the familiar tomato sauce and cheese. Toppings such as onion and peppers add another flavor that bursts through your tastebuds like a bright fish darting through a stormy sea of flavor. Whether you like pineapple on pizza or not, if you’ve never had it, please, try it and see for yourself!
