Everyone hates web filters. They block us from our favorite games, prevent us from watching any sort of movie or tv show, and don’t allow us to go on to any social media whatsoever. And yes, these do seem like trivial things to worry about, especially during school, but those aren’t the only things blocked.
Math websites have been blocked, news pages have been blocked, and much of youtube has been blocked. In short, web filters have gone too far.
While the exact filters put into effect aren’t known to students, certain websites including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and other social media platforms are put on a website blocklist. But website blocklists aren’t the only things filtering our computers. There’s also a list of keywords that, if they are included in some websites, will block the page. One of the those keywords being “Netflix.” However, the weird thing about this list of keywords is that it isn’t always put into effect. For example, this link to a Screen Rant page that includes the word “Netflix” in its title is blocked, however this link to a CNBC page that includes the word “Netflix” in its title is fair game.
And as if that wasn’t enough, then we go on to Youtube. Youtube filters have been a problem for students and teachers alike. They restrict students from watching informational videos and restrict teachers from assigning said videos. Even Youtube channels from news sites have a large portion of their videos blocked. In the past month, around ⅓ of the New York Times’ videos have been blocked. This not only deters students from getting their information in the form of a video, but overall censors the news available to students.
To put it simply, web filters cause more harm than good. Yes, they do protect from certain websites that exceed the maturity allowed in school, but they also block students from basic websites and information needed for school.
And as for the title of this article, it was set up just to see how many students would click here to unblock all their Youtube videos, a way of showing if people see filters as a problem.
